Friday, October 25, 2013

Over the history of the CIBA, there have been some spectacular finals games - in the inaugural championship game, Laval squeaked out a 4-3 victory over Brock in 8 innings; the following year in St. Catharines, the Dalhousie Tigers (probably the strongest team ever) defeated the Brock Badgers; at the end of a rain-soaked championship in 2001, Laval prevailed over UNB in a 4-2 contest that took 15 innings; these same two teams went at it again in Montreal in 2003 with Curtis Chaisson going deep off Laval's ace Charles Tasieux to earn a 3-1 victory for the UNB Cougars and their first of many CIBA titles; the Cape Breton Capers thrilled the home town fans with a 1-0 gem over the York Lions in 2005 - all fantastic displays of college baseball at its best. Julius Caesar once proclaimed, "Alea iacta est" (the die has been cast)!
Over 2,000 years later, "the die has been cast" in the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association which has determined the champions and runners-up to take part in the National Championship that is scheduled for this weekend in Windsor, Ontario.

In the Atlantic Conference, a battle-royal was shaping up between the tough UNB Cougars and the revitalized St. Mary's Huskies.
In the Northern Conference, another type of battle "of revenge" was set to go between the Carleton Ravens from Ottawa and the Concordia Stingers from Montreal.  Last year the Stingers were given a "stinging" sweep at the hands of these same Ravens and were out to reverse the results of last year's defeat.
