UNB returns to the national final Monday, October 16, 2006 by BillMartin The UNB Cougars are headed to Ottawa to take part in the National Championship in their eighth appearance. The Cougars swept defending national champion Cape Breton yesterday in Sydney, NS.
UNB missed the event last year for the first time since joining the university loop. They won the title in 2003 and provided the main competition to Laval during their power years.
The Cougars served notice for the national with decisive wins, 12-9 and 11-1, over the Capers. A week earlier, they upset the Dalhousie Tigers who had been ranked first or second in the land throughout the season.
Going into the playoffs, UNB sported a losing record, but the four straight post season victories moved them to 11 and 9 as they prepare for the trip to Ottawa. |
