Is he his brother's keeper? Wednesday, October 18, 2006 by BillMartin Every national championship will have its quirky stories and subplots, and the 2006 edition is no different. The tourney in Ottawa this weekend will pit brother against brother in the coaching box.
The Dempster boys, Sam and Stephen, will go head-to-head for the first time in university play. Sam, a veteran of the CIBA/ABIC will take his Durham Lords against Stephen in his rookie appearance with the upstart Mets from Atlantic Baptist U in Moncton, NB.
Durham won the Ontario conference title, their third. Meanwhile, ABU received a pass from the Wildcard Committee. The Mets, in their second season in university ball, surprised the tough Atlantic Conference by matching Dalhousie for first place with a 12 and 4 record.
Both Dal and ABU were upset in their conference semi finals. The Mets lost by a single run over 17 innings at the hands of the Cape Breton Capers. Meanwhile, Dal bowed to the resurgent UNB Cougars who will make their eighth appearance at the tournament on the weekend.
The quiet spoken Dempster boys will face-off Saturday morning at 9:00 at the Kinsmen Field in Kanata. |
