Rain, rain go away Friday, October 20, 2006 by BillMartin The fields were wet and the skies overcast when the McGill Redbirds took to the field for the opening game of the nationals. As the first batter for Atlantic Baptist University walked to the plate, the rain started.
The Redbirds scored in the second on an error from the pitcher. Steve
Aube tried a pick-off at first but threw the ball away, allowing a
runner from third to score.
Wet, but undaunted, the two clubs laboured till the 4th inning. Mario Cormier had just slammed a double off the fence in left centre. The Mets had runners at second and third with one out. Nathan Dempster stepped to the batter's box when the plate umpire felt the field was too slippery to continue.
As the teams headed for cover, the rain really started to pour. It wasn't long before everyone motored back to the host hotel to begin discussions on ways to amend the schedule, if the rain stops.
"It seems pretty clear there won't be any ball here today," said league president Kevin Bullock. He added, "It's beginning to look a lot like Kingston," a reference to the 2004 tourney which was not completed.
Discussions with teams and officials from the host committee will determine how to proceed. For the moment, the weather man will make the first move.
