Moncton hosts prepared for national tourney

Moncton hosts prepared for national tourney Thursday, September 13, 2007 by BillMartin This fall Moncton will once again experience a superb baseball tournament. Six of the best university baseball teams in Canada will be playing for the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association championship.
Last year, University of Ottawa hosted the national tournament and McGill won by beating Dalhousie University in the final.
This October 19-21 Atlantic Baptist University will be hosting the national championship series in only the 3rd year of its baseball program. ABU won the bid to host this honour, inspite of strong bids from McGill, Dalhousie, and St. Francis Xavier.
ABU went to last year's national tournament on the strength of a wild card entry with its 12-4 season record in the Atlantic Conference. It was a Cinderella season for the sophomore team. After losing its first two games of the year it went on to win twelve of the next fourteen games.
At the Nationals, ABU did extremely well in hard fought games but coming up on the wrong end of some close scores. Among its games was a 1-0 loss to McGill the eventual champions.
Head coach Dale Somers thinks the experience gained from that tournament can only help ABU in its chances this year. He has virtually all of his team returning with the exception of first baseman Mark Nickerson and outfielder Craig Allin. Returnees include star pitchers Steve Aube, Mario Cormier and Chris Leger; All Canadian University All-Star catcher Mike Ivey; first baseman Greg Reicker; second baseman Serge Vautour; third baseman Steve Bampton and outfielder Nathan Dempster. New additions include transfer student Chris Spooney, an infielder with the Cape Breton University Capers, and the following rookies: outfielder Justin Morton of the Moncton Junior Cubs, infielder Jon Loughery of the Riverview Midget AAA program, and Casey Benson who has played for the Prince Edward Island Selects.
ABU looks to be in a good position to compete well this fall, when the CIBA Nationals come to their town.
