Taking the Long Road Friday, October 19, 2007 by BillMartin
"It has taken us 13 years to get here and we are going to enjoy every minute." That's the view of Howie Schwartz, coach of the Concordia Stingers and Champions of the Northern Conference.
Concordia earned its first berth in the National Championship in what many believed was an upset over nationally ranked Ottawa Gee Gees. The Stingers toughed their way into the conference playoffs and captured the crown 2-1 in the best of three final series.
Just to show it was no fluke, the Stingers reprised their control over the Gee Gees with a 4-0 win in the opening round of the national final. They followed that with an 8-1 romp over UNB.
Concordia was the last remaining school from the founders of their conference to gain an appearance at the national. Laval, McGill, Ottawa and Carleton have all participated over the last 12 events.
Given their start with two quick wins, the Stingers are poised to make their freshman appearance a truly memorable event. |
