Shaw's No-Hitter Serves Notice for Wildcard Friday, October 19, 2007 by BillMartin Timing is everything. Peter Shaw took full advantage of UNB's wildcard entry in the National Championship to serve notice the Cougars belong. Shaw tossed a 3-0 no hitter over ABU in the opening game of the round robin.
UNB, a perennial power in university baseball, finished the regular season in a tie with ABU. However, ABU held the edge in head-to-head competition during the regular season, relegating the Cougars to a second place finish in the conference.
The upstart Dal Tigers eliminated UNB in the semi final while, ABU did likewise to SMU. When ABU emerged as the Conference Champion, CIBA officials awarded Dal (2) and UNB (3) wildcard entries at the national final, joining Ottawa, the #1 wildcard.
Shaw held the pesky ABU Mets off the board in the 3-0 win, earning the game's MVP honours. |
