Host gets Rough with Conference Rival

Host gets Rough with Conference Rival Friday, October 19, 2007 by BillMartin The ABU Mets more than earned the right to be in the 2007 National Championship. The Mets were not content with their guaranteed spot in the tournament by virtue of hosting the event. They wanted all to know that they belong among the league's elite.
The team from the "little school that could" became the little school that did when the claimed first place in their regular season conference standings, then reinforced that by winning the conference title.
So, it must have been a little disconcerting just a week later to find their first two games at the national championship were against conference rivals. Both Dalhousie (conference finalist) and UNB (conference second place) were awarded wildcard spots in the tournament.
UNB dumped the Mets 3-0 on the strength of Peter Shaw's no-hitter pitching in game one, so the Mets had to get gritty when they met Dalhousie in the featured game of the evening.
It was a no holds barred performance as ABU trounced the Tigers 12-1. They broke open two innings with identical five run outbursts. When Dalhousie got on the board with a run in the sixth, the Mets responded with a pair in their half of the inning.
Justin Morton scattered eight hits to secure the win before a boisterous and partisan crowd at Kiwanis Park.

Serge Vautour, the Mets slugger, and Kyle White were named the game's MVPs. Ross Huehn of KR3 Bats presented the two stars with award bats. |
