Title is Up for Grabs Saturday, October 20, 2007 by BillMartin Get out your slide rule and let's see who is first. The playoff standings could not be decided until the final out of the last game of the round robin. Four teams were tied with two wins and a loss, so the mathemeticians were needed to decipher the tie breaking formula.
In the end, Concordia was first, followed by ABU, UNB and Dalhousie. That set-up the semi final match-ups, Sunday morning at 10:00, between Concordia and Dal at U de M field while the two New Brunswick schools would meet at Kiwanis.
The tie breaking formula looks at how many runs each team allowed per defensive inning. Concordia was the most stingy, allowing just four runs during the round robin. ABU let in 6 while UNB gave up 8 and Dalhousie permitted 14.
Concordia earned its berth early with two first round wins before Dal handed them a 3-1 loss. ABU clinched with a 3-2 victory over the winless Ottawa Gee Gees. That left UNB and Durham, both at 1 and 1, in the final and deciding game. The winner would advance but everyone had to wait for the run count to determine the standings.
With the 3-0 win, UNB joined its Atlantic Conference colleagues in the playoff round, with Concordia the only interloper in the Atlantic affair. The semi finals are repeat match-ups from the round robin.
The winners advance to the Championship at 2:00 at Kiwanis Park. |
